The history of Muntinlupa may be traced back to the time when it was under the supervision of the Augustinian friars in 1601. In 1800, Father Joaquin de Zuñiga recorded it as 'La Poblacion Que Sigue Se Llama Muntinlupa,' from which it has derived its name.
Muntinlupa was one of the districts of Morong, Rizal in 1901. On November 25, 1903, by Act No. 1008 of the Philippine Commission, the town was included within the boundary of Laguna and placed under Biñan together with San Pedro. Muntinlupa residents protested against this Executive Act and, through their town head, Marcelo Fresnedi, filed a formal complaint and petition to the Governor for the return of the municipality to the province of Rizal. The petition was granted through Act No. 1308, which was approved on March 22, 1905, paving the way for Muntinlupa's return to Rizal to become a part of Taguig along with Pateros.
The distance of Taguig was a source of dissatisfaction for the residents of Muntinlupa. Another petition was made, this time, for the separation of Muntinlupa as an independent town.
Independence was eventually granted on December 19, 1917 under Executive Act No. 108 signed by Governor General Harrison, which took effect on January 1, 1918.
Air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses alike ply the major routes in Muntinlupa City. The colorful jeepney, the Filipino's primary means of transportation, which is described as the 'Art in Combat,' plies most of Muntinlupa City's secondary roads and even a few major thoroughfares.
