San Agustin Church, completed in 1606, has withstood all the fires and earthquakes that have hit Manila through the centuries. One of the four Philippine Baroque Churches inscribed in the World Heritage List, its monastery has been turned into a museum housing priceless religious artifacts.
At the center of Intramuros is the grand Manila Cathedral with its detailed stone carvings, stained glass mosaics and rose windows.
Founded by Dominican priests in 1596 to serve their Chinese converts to Christianity, Binondo Church, also known as the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz, was named after the sacristan who was Philippines' first saint and canonized in 1989.
The Quiapo Church (also known as the "Church of the Black Nazarene" and, in Tagalog, as the "Basilika ng Nazareno") houses a large black wooden statue of Christ bearing the cross (the "Black Nazarene"). This crucifix was carved in Mexico and was brought to the Philippines from Mexico by Spanish galleon in 1767. It is said to have miraculous powers.
Paco Church, or Saint Pancratius Chapel, a small circular chapel, is the site of many quiet weddings. The park around it was declared a national park in 1966. It is a charming spot where visitors promenade.
Founded by the Franciscan Missionaries in 1578, the Santa Ana Church was the first mission outside the walled city of Manila. The present church and convent were built in 1720.
The Malate Church is a Baroque-style church which faces a small park and beyond that Manila Bay. The church was built originally on this spot in the sixteenth century by the Augustinians, and is one of the oldest churches in Manila outside of Intramuros. Malate Church is dedicated to Nuestra Senora de Remedios ("Our Lady of Remedies"), the patroness of women in childbirth. A revered statue of the Virgin Mary in her role as Our Lady of Remedies was brought from Spain in 1624 and stands at the altar.
