Description:
It is believed that Taal Volcano was once a giant volcano, that Tagaytay Ridge itself is the rim and remnant of a massive explosion in prehistoric times. So violent was the explosion that it spewed volcanic debris forming the coastal province of Cavite and the coastal municipalities of Batangas province.
This theory or belief may be true since these islands lie in the Pacific seismic belt. The eruptions between 1716 and 1754 (considered modern times) as written in historical records of a church, desribes the "ashes spewed by the volcano darkened the skies. Rains, thunders, massive earthquakes, and gigantic waves caused the residents to flee to higher areas. Some seek refuge in the church. The consternation killed the fishes large and small, emitting foul odor for many days."
The eruption in 1911 killed 1,300 people; and buried 6 barrios and 300 more lives in 1965.
From Tagaytay, drive easy to the narrow zigzag road, cross mountain saddles, view the verdant vegetation, and down to the town of Talisay in Batangas. A breather, upon arrival at the resort, don your life jackets and board a motorized outrigger for a 30-minute lake cruising towards Taal Volcano Island.
Light trekkers may opt to rent a pony going up the rim of the crater to view the caldera. Islanders rent out horses for a minimal fee; consult your local guide. Otherwise, your guide will accompany you to a leisure hike up to the ridge. Thereafter, return to the shoreline resort for a sumptuous lunch.
Strong trekkers will dock on the western side past the fish pens, hike through the vegetation up to an easy incline and down to the crater for a close-up view of the caldera. The volcanic lake, believed to be medicinal, invites hikers to a relaxing swim. Thereafter, return to a shoreline resort for a sumptuous lunch.
