One of the most historical islands of Micronesia, it was the site of a major World War II land, sea and air battle.
Saipan is in the northwest corner of Micronesia, 120 miles north of Guam. The island is 14 mileslong, five miles wide, and offers a diverse fgeography including lush jungles, mountain ridges, white sand beaches and high ocean cliffs.
Saipan is one of the most historical islands of Micronesia, as it was the site of a majore World War II land, sea and air battle. Many of the historic battle sites have been made into lovely parks and monuments.
Other historic points of interest include the old Garapan Jail where pilot Amelia Earhart was rumored to have been held captive. Nearby are the ruins of a Japanese hospital and a well-preserved locomotive from the pre-war sugarcane railroad.
For divers, Saipan has its share of World War II wrecks. An estimated 18 Japanese shipes were sunk around this island and some remain undiscovered. The major wreck diving area is Tanapag Harbor. This area is protected by a long semi-circular coral reef that curves outward. The harbor bottom is white sand and visibility can reach 60 feet. It is an excellent area for beginning and itermediate divers and there is good snorkeling.
