The main gateways into the Federated States of Micronesia are Honolulu, Manila and Guam (flights arrive there from the USA, Australia and Asia). There are also twice-weekly flights from Taipei. A Circle Micronesia air pass originating in Los Angeles or San Francisco, or a Visit Micronesia pass originating in Guam, will let you hop around the islands.
There is a US$5 departure tax from Pohnpei, US$10 from Chuuk and US$10 from Kosrae. Yap has no departure tax.
Entry Formalities Visas are not required for visitors of 30 days or less. You must have a valid passport or documenation of citizenship. All visitors must have an onward or return ticket. Entry authorization for longer than 30 days must be obtained in advance from the Office of Immigration and Labor, FSM National Government, Kolonia, Pohnpei, FSM 96941. No immunizations are required unless coming from an infected area.
Customs Allowances Prohibited are certain plants, fruits, animals, narcotics and weapons. Two bottles of liquor (1500ml) and one carton of cigaretes (200 pieces) can be brought in duty free.
Time Zone GMT + 10) - Yap is on the same time zone as Guam, Chuuk and Sydney, Australia, one hour earlier than the islands of Pohnpei and Kosrae, and one hour later than Palau and Tokyo, Japan.
Currency The official currency is the U.S. dollar. Credit cards are accepted in some stores and hotels. However, having enough traveler's checks/cash in U.S. dollars is recommended. Foreign currency exchange is not available in Yap.
Communications International telephone calls to anywhere in the world can be made from any telephone in Yap by using a prepaid Telcard, which can be obtained in some hotels, stores and the FSM Telecom Office, which is open 24 hours a day and also provides fax and internet services. The Yap Post Office, which is a branch of the FSM Postal System that works as a part of the US Postal Service, is located in Colonia. The FSM Postal System issues its own postage stamps adorned with rich cultural representations and colorful designs of flora and fauna of the FSM.
Island Transportation Taxis are readily available and can take passengers to most locations on Yap Main Islands. Public buses serve between Colonia and the villages in early morning and evening primarily for students and workers. Rental cars are available and can be arranged by hotels and Rent-A-Car companies. Please be reminded that once off the paved road most of the areas are privately owned and permission is required before entering.
Electricity Standard 110 V/60HZ and US type outlets are used.
Climate Average temperature in Yap is 26 degrees Celsius/80 degrees Fahrenheit and mostly moderate and fairly constant. Average watertemperature is 28 degrees Celsius/83 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity ranges from 65 to 100persent with an annual average of 83 per cent. Rainfall averages 3000 mm/120 inches a year. The trade wind season (November through April, marked by strong east to northeast winds) is relatively dry while several rain showers a day tend to occur in the months of June through September that refresh the island vegetation.
What to wear Wear casual clothing and travel light. A cap, shorts, lightweight cotton pants, sport shirts and a T-shirt or two make a good basic wardrobe. Flip-flops (Zorries) are acceptable footwear any place on the island. Slacks and a Hawaiian style shirt are appropriate for the most formal occasion for men. Lightweight cotton dresses, blouses and skirts make the best island wear for women.
Caution Being topless is socially acceptable in Yp, but it is considered highly offensive for women to bare their thighs in public. Longer shorts and slacks are acceptable on most parts of the island but not shorts, bikinis or miniskirts. These dress restrictions do not apply when diving or sunbathing on a boat or some private beaches, but one's thighs should be covered when getting out of water or leaving the beach. Bringing a wrap-around skirt or sarong might be useful.
Others Water from the tap is not suitable for drinking in Colonia. Please obtain purified water from hotels/restaurants or bottled water from stores. It is a good idea to apply insect repellant when going outdoors, especially in the early mornings and evenings.
